It's with a heavy heart that i have to be the bearer of sad news for all you melonfans. For the past two years, the band has struggled to maintain our fan base and touring and recording profile. Without the support of a major label promotion and touring financial advantages, it has become a diminshing scenario for Cravin' Melon. Doug has decided that it's time to hang up the hat and pursue other things. That being said, the band has decided that without Doug, it just wouldn't be Cravin' Melon. Therefore we are annoucing the band's retirement effective Mid April. We are going to try to hit every market that we can between now and April 15, so keep and eye on the Dates Page of the website and come on out to bid the band farewell. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank ALL of our fans throughout the world, from the bottom of our hearts. It was you, the fans that kept us going over the years. We'd also like to thank Scotty and Keith, the the street team, and all of the family members that have supported us over the past 8 years. We had a good run at it, we made a lot of folks happy and we had some great shows along the way. We're sorry to see it come to a close, but that's where we are. Cravin's music has touched a lot of folks. Let's remember all the good times fondly, play the CDS and be thankful we had a chance to do this.

I was shocked and saddened by the news. I have been listening to you guys since my undergrad days at Clemson and have enjoyed countless shows throughout the Carolinas and even last spring in my current location of New Orleans. I never thought that the last show that I saw would be just that. Hopefully, I can make it to at least one more. Thanks for all of the wonderful music over the years. Best of luck to you all.

Like everyone else, I will miss the band and their music. When I read the news on Thursday afternoon I was so sad! Then, when I got in my car, "Come Undone" was on SURF. I thought that was wonderful timing, because that's how I felt. Cravin' Melon will always hold a special place in my heart. My first Melon concert was in March of '98 at the HOB when Squeeze Me was being recorded. It was also my first date with my boyfriend. What a wonderful way to start a relationship!! We will definitely be at Marrz for the show on Feb. 9. I wish all the members success in all that they do! You are all so talented!

Scanning pictures... I've been doing a lot of that lately. I've got them all lined up from Golf Rock til this past NYE. Over three photo boxes and I'm even sure if that is all of them. Ok, here's some more for you: "The flute IS a heavy metal instrument!" "Did that bird just fly into the window?" "Did we all just yawn? We're not dinosaurs here!" "You don't have to be smart and educated to be a football player." "Welcome to Uni-house, NC" "Ooo, ooo, ooo, a tuning shot!" "Well, he looks like Tarzan!" *commercial comes on at that very moment* "Hey! You're right, he does! Dude, you look like Tarzan!!!" "That's not a bale of hay. It's Red Clay Harvest!." I have the pictures of Cushman with pee peed pants. I might just have to scan those too, since they are a group shot with our "boys." I don't even want to think about Rob with the pink frog. I can never look at my poor little stuffed frog the same way again. I personally like the look on Scotty's face trying to figure out the "posters" on the wall. I hope like hell he couldn't read the ones up top. I'll never tell!!!! How about this...."There is NO Way in hell that I'm going to feed the band and then not be able to get because of it, (put various explatives screamed at the bouncer here)"

HEY SISTER, just thought that I'd write and let you know that FAITHLESS ME has COME UNDONE. The other day while I was in the POST OFFICE, I saw JODA, our EX-STEPMOTHER. I mean, there she was RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF ME. She smelled of the same SWEET BLOSSOM as always. I tried to PRETEND that I didn't see her. It's been so long. Their's was definately not a story of CAMELOT, this is the OLD MAN SONG. Our father was such a SIMPLE MAN, but her, she's nuts! She's got a STRANGE WAY, and SHE LOVES THE FIRE. I guess that's why she started it. Don't get me wrong, she's still a BEAUTIFUL THING, but she don't wanna be NOBODY'S PRIZE. She wanted to talk but I said that I GOT NO TIME right now. "Please," she said, "You're my ONE AND ONLY FRIEND. I'm DOWN WITHOUT A HOME. I'm on my knees begging you. I feel like I'm TIED TO THE WHEEL." I knew what she wanted, but I didn't know if I could do that. I tried to give her a bundle of SILK SUNFLOWERS to comfort her and calm her down. Trying to change the subject I said to her, "You know there will COME A DAY when I'll be RUNNING to FREEDOM TOWN, and if I CAN'T FIND MY WAY I may end up in the LAND OF OZ or even Spain. Ya know, I've NEVER BEEN TO SPAIN." She lashed out at me grabbing and screaming, "Give it to me! SAVE ME!" Ok, instead of being THE GREAT PROCRASTINATOR, and giving you a SUGAR COATED GOOD-BYE, I'll just tell you that... yes, I did in the end give her what she wanted. I gave the poor woman my SWEET TEA!

I've thought a lot about you guys since Thursday morning when I first saw your message. I didn't write, because I didn't know what to say. I never thought there would come a time when you wouldn't be around. Your music has touched me deeply and has marked a very happy time during my life. Although I am not a part of your life, you have been a part of my life for quite a while. I first heard you guys when, Jimbo, you were a part of "The Next Move". (By they way, do you have any of those old CD's left?) I thought you were great then and was so bummed when you broke up. Then you created CM. When I remember the happy times that I have had, there are always CM songs playing along with my memories. For instance, I hear CM when I think of the time that I met my husband, when I remember good times and good drinks with friends and when I think of the time when my niece was born. I can't even order sweet tea without tinking of you. You guys are so gifted and certainly had the talent to make it big....you just needed that break. I can not begin to tell you how much I will miss you and your live music. I will continue to listen to your CDs because your music simply brings back so many good memories. Best of luck to you all wherever life leads you. Know that you will always have fans in Roanoke who think you are simply the greatest. (By the way, will there be another Roanoke show? Please say yes!!!) Words inadequately describe my feelings toward you and your music, but just know that you will always be admired.

It certainly has been a pleasure watching Cravin' all these years...besides the enjoyment of going to the shows, seeing people there who enjoy the same thing you do - wonderful music - the incredible generousity of the band members (Doug and Rick especially) that go out of their way to remember not just a name and a face, but the person. From the first time being invited to stay after hours at Tiger Town back in 94, to sitting with the guys at the Chameleon Club (Atlanta) watching the NCAA tourney in 96...it goes on and on.... Thank you so much for that! We will see you again soon.

...Just made it home from playing at Swells Beach club, in North Myrtle Beach,...and I had to get on line, and check the guestbook out. It's great to see all of CM's fans showing their love for an awesome band. I came in, connected to the internet, and went to melonpatch.com. I began reading all the new post, and by the third one, i found myself getting up, and putting the Great Procrastinator on. Right now, i'm listening to 'She loves the Fire'....and it just makes me feel so good! Cravin Melon....you guys are great, and I am going to catch every show that i can from here on out. Thanks for giving me happy music that picks me up when I'm down. I first saw you guys live, at the HOUSE OF BLUES in Myrtle Beach, and from then on, I was hooked. I just read Dougs' post, and it gave me the urge to tell him, and the rest of the band, that they gave me a very special night back in July, 15 2000, when you guys played the HOB's. You opened up new doors, and gave me an inspiration that has created a new 'ME'. Thanks for that!! "....to close for me to see, right there in front of me"

Had the chance to see Nine Days (Absolutely - The Story of a Girl) tonight... they're Long Island's "Hometown" Band... Anyway, they played for almost 3 hours WITHOUT a bathroom break (impressive, even the Melon's need to pee!) and totally rocked the place. John Hampson, their lead singer, was a roadie for my cousin's band years ago... I began to wonder... Why didn't I know about THIS band all these years? Why is their music essentially new to me over the last 6 months or so? Was I living under a rock? Then I realized... I was in college at UNC... singing in the church choir with Mike Garrigan (of Collapsis) and listening to Cravin' Melon on G-105... At first I thought I had missed out on something good - then it became clear that, instead, I got to experience something GREAT. I had a moment there at Port Jefferson's Village Pub, as I saw the band hugging all their hometown friends... the sadness hit. The "finality" settled in. I'm hoping (it's not looking good) to make one last road trip down South so I can hug y'all one more time and say "Great show - love y'all!" PLEASE consider coming up here before April. Your NY, Philly, Boston/NH friends want the chance to say "Thanks" in person. We'll feed you, give you a place to sleep, and anything else you need... we'll even give you gas $ if that'll get the van headed North... just give us our own chance to say farewell... That's all I can say right now. :(

I just want to say thank you to everyone who has posted such nice comments on the band; I think I speak for everyone else when I say that we need this. I know that I do! It is so hard for me to read this guestbook, yet I find myself checking up on it all the time, because I need to know that what we did really meant something to everyone besides ourselves. I don't know how I'm going to get through these last shows, so don't be shocked if I just lose it for a moment. Tears will be shead, so just be prepared. I hope that evweryone who can be at any show possible will please try to be there; we want to say farewell to you as much as you want to say farewell to the band. Just remember, you might remember the songs, but we'll remember you. That's the hardest part!!

Jules, it was a pleasure meeting you as well. Let's hope that all our paths continue to cross as our dear friends all find other avenues to unleash their musical spirit (which I'm most definitely praying they do.) This goes out to all the other FRC members and fans that I've met through the years with this INCREDIBLE band. Terri, Terri (my new friend from Raliegh/Richmond), Cara, Rob, Myra, April (so much love to you both..e-mail me), Brooke, Bonnie, Keith, Kevin, Iris (you know I love ya), Stephanie, Oh my there are thirty FRC members from our original induction. You all know who you are. Amy, Doreena, I keep screwing up your husband's name because of all the quarters, you will always be FRC in the true sence of the word. Never lose touch of the music and we'll always be connected. Oh all right already, enough of this sap. Everyone had better make it to the last show(yes I just typed that). I don't care what else is going on, be there. There will never be another opportunity like this to cross your path. Coming from someone who has been through this before with Jimbo and Rick, you'll regret it if you don't. Fly, train, carpool, just e-mail ANY of us if you need a ride. Just be there. Oh, and "still pledging allegiance (I really can't spell)" There was one at the New Year's before last as well, and at the first FreeBird Cafe show remember. That makes me sleep a little easier. "Someone" is watching over their shoulders.

May 1997, I'd been here 3 months. My 3 friends drag my arse down to Music Midtown when it opens to hear this band my friend liked at UVA. They rock. June 1997 - the band plays at the Cotton Club. All of a sudden, they start into this song and I hear the word "Melbourne" MAAAAAAAAATE! It's like being Howme! Joe was "pissed" and Doug was sooo nice! Six months pass, Cotton Club again. "I forgot your name, but you are from Australia?" And the rest is Melonicious! Any doubt what my favourite song is? Hey Merle - I'm going in April.......Jimbo, Robbo, Gary, Chad as well as the former Melons, JJ and Rick, it was an honour and pleasure. I will miss you dearly. Carolina FRCs - I'm sorry I will not get to meet most of you. Myzze, Yvette, Terri, Resh (in spirit) I'm glad our paths crossed. I hope everyone will try to get to the last show in Hotlanta. Favorite memory, are you kidding me? I have three scrapbooks and a box that holds six one gallon bottles full of Cravin' Melon pictures. I couldn't pick a favorite memory any more than I could pick a favorite song. I could however share some VERY OLD pictures with you. Give me a few days to get them scanned. Sometimes Zing can be a major pain in the behind. They may be in the form of scrapbook pages, but I'm sure you'll enjoy them anyway. OK, as to favorite songs....The list for today (which I'm sure will change before the evening is up)... well, this sucks! like many of you, i've been a fan for years and have seen many shows. the ones at the blind tiger in greensboro, nc will always be the highlight of my tenure there and contribute to the fondest of memories of an otherwise uneventful place. after frequent guestbook grumblings, i'm glad melon finally made it back to rochester this fall. i hope that i'll see ya'll here before the big goodbye. i also hope that your last venue's a large one 'cause i have a feeling we'll all end up there! thanks for the memories . . .

Melongeek -- glad to help out. I LOVE reading these posts of everyone's memories. It's good to see I'm not alone in my MELON-choly (sorry, couldn't resist!) About this poll - damn! How do you narrow down the music of the last 5 years of your life to only 5 songs? Not easy but here goes: 1. Land of Oz (full live version) 2. Come a Day (that "pride" song that introduced me to the Melon) 3. Camelot 4. Hey Sister 5. Faithless Me - I think I cried the first time I heard that. Ah well, it ain't over yet... I've got some travelin' to do over the next few months!

Ok, here goes an official post of sorts...I'm not ready to share all my feelings on this news publicly. Suffice it to say that I am deeply saddened, but wish the guys all the best. They'll never know how much they've impacted my life and for that, I'll love them always and treasure each memory. Speaking of memories Myz, I wasn't quite up to the task the other night, but I can't get the dancing Santa visual out of my head. "How's that go now? 1-2, 1-2-3 and 1-2, 1-2-3...?" Now for top 5 favs (SO difficult to narrow this down): 1)Freedom Town, 2)Sugar Coated, 3)Faithless Me, 4)Silk Sunflowers, and 5)Blossom -- acoustic/Simple Man, which I've never heard live *hint* (OK so it was a tie, you really think I could only pick 5?) Well, that's all for now folks. I'll see you all soon...remember, "A memory that's torn and dry can still hold us together.."

Answering the Melonpoll: 1) Faithless Me 2) Freedom Town 3) Blossom 4) Running 5) Come A Day... VERY HARD to choose... I love all the versions of ALL the songs! My favorite memories include talking horoscopes (loving being Libras) and college hoops (TAR HEELS BABY) on my 25th birthday w/Rob at Irving Plaza, hanging with all the guys at Shades of Green afterwards (what a GREAT birthday!), the Makor show - don't even remember the name of that pub we spent so many hours in... drawing X-men "Wolverine" claws on our hands with a Sharpie pen (try washing THAT off), skipping through the streets of Manhattan arm-in-arm, eating NY pizza at 4 am, then wrestling on a random West Side street corner... My roadtrip to Danville in November - sitting at the Sir Richard's dinner table catching up with everyone... where I met Terri, et al and officially joined the FRC. Then there was Christmas weekend in Philly... besides my adventures with Jimbo (previously posted), watching/listening to Chadly jam with Gary the PMB guys before the show - Pookie CAN play that piano (you are so talented!), having yet another "pizza pie" and discussing heritage and high schools and siblings and holiday plans, learning chords and playing Doug's guitar with Rob as my teacher (still haven't mastered "double D"), eating PMB's food, especially the double-stuffed oreos and writing a song about them (G-D-Am-C), and taking pictures of Christy & her son with the guys outside TLA - and seeing the joy & excitement on that little boy's face! :) Finally, my almost-disasterous New Year's Eve trip... the worst December blizzard in 60 years in NY and lost luggage couldn't keep me away... those memories I'll keep inside room 206 and my heart. Thanks for reading - and for sharing. "If I could sit across the porch from God, I'd thank him for lending me you..." Hugs y'all... love ya!

Alright, I already posted the memories and thoughts, so here is my Top 5 Songs List. 1-Pretend, 2-Freedom Town, 3-Sweet Tea, 4-Come Undone, 5-Blossom. Really, all the songs would have to go on the favorites list, but those are probably the 5 that have the most meaning to me.

It doesn't look like my post got saved, but that's alright. I remember what I had asked. I said something to the effect of ... Where's Reshjena? And there are a few others who haven't posted like Iris, Brooke, Kevin D., Myra, April, Benji, Julie, and lots more "regulars" from both the live shows and the M-patch. Rita was on this list but has since posted. Is everyone out there ok? Post some memories for us. We know you've got them.

I'm the saddest girl now reading and hearing about a great band having to give up the ghost in the face of empty headed pop onslaught of Britney, Christina and the other flashes of light....I've been a major fan for a few years now...since a good friend first played Squeeze Me...I've seen the band at home and in Charleston and other places...I've seen them jam with House of Dreams (another great band that got caught in a label crunch)...thanks for keeping it real and helping bring me many, many smiles....Doug, Rob and everyone one else....you made two girls a very special concert in Bham a few months ago! It is with a sad and heavy heart that I am reading and responding to this message pertaining to the band's early retirement. I have been blessed enough to be a tiny part of the Cravin' Melon "production" many times through merchandise sales at the Windjammer and other fine South Carolina establishments. It has been a wonderful pleasure to get to know all of you, Doug, Rob, Gary, Rob, Scotty, Keith, and even Rick. Not only are you all great musicians, but also you are all GREAT people. I do have all of the Cravin Melon CDs, so any time I want to hear your wonderful music, I can just pop in a CD and there you guys are, but I will miss the live shows. I hope you guys get to pop into Clemson one last time. You will be truly missed by all of your devoted Melon fans, especially the FRC, and myself. Again, it is with heavy heart that I have to say goodbye to the most devoted group of guys that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I hope that all of your future endeavors are all very successful. It is sad to say that my favorite band EVER is retiring, but you GENTLEMEN will always remain in my heart. Cravin' Melon forever.

I will vote for my top 5 songs, I'm still not ready to share my thoughts on this news. There are so many wonderful and touching songs, so here we go...1)Faithlessme..2)Freedom Town (what tight harmonies...)..3)Save Me.(Jimbo, this has to be your finest)...4)Sugar Coated (especially with Myz on backup(I guess I'm a little predjudice on this one)....5)Silk Sunflowers. This was not an easy decision to make with so many fantastic songs that mean so much to so many. The Melon boys are the most fantastic human beings that I have had the pleasure to meet. My frienship goes back to the Next Move and then on to Cravin' Melon. Missy you know who became Myzze was very instrumental and stoking those friendship fires. I remember her getting dressed like a grown up so she could come up to the TROPICANA, she wanted to meet this good looking group of guys Rick,Jimbo,Ray,Tony T and Wayne. They just happened to be THE NEXT MOVE. Man, did she have them all fooled, you should have seen Rick trying to play pool with her and Anthony trying get in on it also while Jimbo sat on the sidelines laughing with me, I let him in on the secret that she was only 14 but looked 21. She knew at that very moment that she was going to forge a friendship that would last a life time. Over this period of time we have both watched them go thru their growing pains and decide to do something new and then there was Cravin' Melon. How many have seen Doug with SHORT HAIR, or Jimbo with BLEACHED BLONDE HAIR and Rick with BIG HAIR? I have driven and flown, to support the boys, and would continue as long as they are together. It has been a family venture and pleasure to support them, with me at 45 and my mom at 64 and Myz. We have done many 3 generation shows. I will be making the final show, but plan on having a great time on February 16th. THIS IS A CALL FOR ALL MELONSEEDS AND MELONHEADS from Georgia and all over Florida to be at the FREEBIRD CAFE', come and show your support. For most of you this will be your final show, so don't miss out. The FreeBird Cafe' is big and can accomadate a large crowd. I think they might be doing the two set show, 2 hours of Melon and all your favorite songs. BRING YOUR OWN TISSUES AND EVERYONE YOU KNOW............ I am deeply saddened by this news and will always consider myself a Melonhead. I plan on supporting the boys with whatever comes their way. I truly hope this will include MUSIC, as previously noted God gives gifts that should not be waisted.

I think it's time to conduct an informal "MelonPoll". Vote your Top 5 Cravin Melon songs of all time, in order. I'll keep a tally and post the Top Five sometime in early April. Here's mine. 1) Sweet Tea (live, with Chris Spruill singing backup) 2) Silk Sunflowers 3) Sugarcoated 4) Can't Find My Way Home 5) Down Without a Home And for the record, anyone who missed Doug sing the National Anthem at the 1998 Monday Night 49er-Carolina Panther game missed an unbelievable treat. Hello Melonseeds! I just received some bad news about a good friend of mine named Melissa Anderson. She was in a serious accident New Years Day and is now out of the hospital but residing in a rehad center in Asheville, NC. She has just had surgery and still remains in a brace for her back & neck. Please keep her in your thoughts! She is a melonseed and the goal here is to get her well enough so she can make it to one of the last shows and bang on the pots and pans with me! Thanks!

Okay, I am reposting what I originally wrote on Jan. 10th before the big crash: WOW! My mouth hurts from hanging open all morning, but I am now able to post a little something. I have so much to say that you'll probably find me posting quite a bit because I have so many awesome memories. I first wanna say that I UNDERSTAND. I have always admired you guys for touring all over the place, all the time, and have always thought it takes a very special group of people to stay together in the manner that you guys have shown us over the past 8 years. You have shown melonseeds far and wide what dedication and love for life and music truly is. However, it has come time for you to move on, and I repect that. I myself have been in your position of having to quit something I love and move on, so I feel your pain, but acknowledge your guts and glory. I think your positive attitude about all you have accomplished and all the lives you've touched is AWESOME! This will continue to lead you ALL to another road of success, whatever that may be. All I know, is that I will miss you guys so much. I first got to know you crazy guys way back when, up in the Western North Carolina Mtns. Remember that little hole in the wall Bailey's? Or was that a rat trap? HA! HA! I never knew what great things you would bring into my life: great tunes (duh...), great friends, the meeting of new friends, flyers, flyers, and more flyers (thanks for always trusting my creative side), lots of laughs, dancing (FRC Rules!), lots of sweet tea, taking a shot of "birdshit" w/ Jimbo, hobling along to another show w/ my big ol' boot cast (Rob, I know that one really cracked you up!), all the road trips to another show, etc. I could go on forever! The point here is that there is nothing better than getting pumped up for a CM show! You guys could always get my friends in one place for a great time and you never even knew you were doing it, or did you? Thanks so much for sharing your talent and providing me with such joy. Thanks for making my social calender look so..... busy, ha! ha! I have also really enjoyed being a part of the street team. I have met some great people along the way while "working it" to hang up or pass out another flyer! HA! HA! When people would ask me about you guys, I would tell them about your sweet sounding tunes and that I enjoyed helping you out and promoting your awesome music b/c you guys were so nice, laid back and FUN! You treat everyone like long lost family and appreciate our hard work in promoting the shows. Every show is a guaranteed damn good time! You are truly nice guys which is so hard to come by! Although I am sad, I am just so damn glad I was blessed to share in the experience with you and be a part of such wonderful music, great people, and that I will have a lifetime of memories to smile over for the rest of my life. I wish you all the best of luck and hope that you will keep your melonfans updated on what you are conquering next. Thanks for everything and for sharing your sweet sounds with me and all the melonseeds in the world! Until we meet again, have a happy day! Peas and melons!

LOL) Hell, tell Jeff he can come too! So GOOD LUCK and BEST WISHES to you all!! Hey Doug, Jimbo, Chad and my two buddies, Rob & Gary, do us a favor and try to keep in touch. Drop a line once in a while so we will know that there is always a spot int he Melonpatch that we can call home! THANK YOU for everything. Take Care! I'll miss you guys. I sit here writing through tear-stained eyesTrying to comprehend the reasons whyAll I've come to know and love over the past few yearsMust come to an end and fuel my fears. You've invaded my heart, you've invaded my soulYet when I felt despair, you made me wholeMy life changed for the better the night we first metThat's a moment in time I pray I never forget. You'll never know how much your friendship and music means to meAs I sit here writing while I can no longer seeThrough tear-stained eyes I try to comprehendThe reasons why such a good thing must come to an end.I send you best wishes, godspeed and suchJust remember the lives you have still yet to touch.I will always love you and the friendships I've made along the way. I will see you all very soon, and by the way Doug, I still think you could have hung the moon.

I am so sorry to hear that the Band is breaking up. We have enjoyed your music for years, following you through NC and SC. I am an older fan (41) and it has been fun, calling ourselves Melon groupies and making a bee-line to any where remotely close to home where you were playing. (Greensboro, NC) We have enjoyed the shows and CD's so much. All of you are very talented and the sound of your music has touched me so much that it has brought tears to my eyes. I've been a Melonhead for a long time now, and I think I'm qualified to speak for all Melonheads everywhere when I say that if any band has ever reached people with their music, Cravin' Melon has, and in a huge way. All the songs bring back memories of different people, places, things I've done, whatever, all through high school and college. I remember the first time I saw you guys play at Be Here Now, I wasn't ready for the show to be over. Since then, I've been to more shows at Be Here Now than I can remember, and each show at the new Music Zone. I got signed up with the Melonseeds when that started, and worked the merch. table at the last Music Zone show. I was looking forward to doing so much more promotion and helping out, not to mention listening to the music live. There's nothing like Cravin' music live. Well, the Head Melon told me to look at it as a gift, and there was never a guarantee of longevity, which is right. I appreciate it, too. I'm thankful that God gave you guys the gift to do what you do, and I'm thankful that I was able to get in on it. I hope you realize, though, that in ending the band, you have cost me quite a bit of money, because now I have to go out and buy 3 or 4 more copies of each CD so that I'll always have backups in case they get scratched or just played to death. I'm sure you guys know what you're doing, but I have to say that nobody consulted me before making this decision. I hope everything goes great for y'all in the future, and if there is ever a reunion, I better be informed. I'm in my third year of college now, and it's hard to believe that something I've loved since before I ever even had Driver's Ed. in high school is ending. The music's not going anywhere though. Together or not, Cravin' is going to keep it's place as my favorite band. Look at it this way, whatever you guys undertake in the future, you already have loyal fans. Thanks again for doing all you've done. Laaater!!!

I have been DREADING this...but here goes..MY TURN...The first time I heard SWEET-TEA, I loved it instantly. I'LL COME UNDONE, is by far, my all time favorite. I began dragging my family to shows sometime in the Spring of 97?98? something like that ...Well, of course it was LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT! (and sound) Then there was this little afternoon at Manifest that brought us close to a group of the nicest guys, all the good stuff I had heard was true!! :) That day became the beginning of a very special friendship, not only with ya'll , but between me and my neice. We have bonded in ways that cannot be explained or understood, but it was a "good thing" and still is! It was there that some guy , I had never met played a little joke on me, unknowing it would become the anthem for things to come! Let's just say I will forever be...The NameTagLady,a joke, my neice shall never let me forget!( Some guy in a Curious George T-shirt...hmmmmmmmm??Who could that be???)This began a frenzy of concert planning and shows we HAD to attend!! (all not to be forgotten!) It all seems like a flash: "safety nets",drum-stik tricks, melon-slice rugs, little stuffed monkeys', MY FAVORITE MELON IS>>>(Doug...Em says "you got some s-planin' to do) , Eastside (who turned off the lights?),5-points (5 guys! Columbia,5 minute-walking tour),and there is the matter of "Greer" (Rob!!stop kickin' her!), and Bobba, the photographer. Please make one of the close shows one they can attend with me for Melon-SAKE!!(all-ages) Enjoyed spreadin' the seeds on the S-Team for a Short while :( & check the mail, the video is on it's way! I know I probably forgot somethin', but I'll be around til' the ...well you know, don't make me say it!! You are ALWAYS welcome to come and see us and have some of my FAMOUS Sweet-tea. Dick, thanks for the late-night cyber-conversations. Need to end..What a week!!!! AND Guess what... MY NAME TAG BROKE!!! Gotta get a new one tomorrow! ( Just in case you know me! ) Laughin' through my tears!! If you are "WHERE YOU WANNA BE"...who are we to temp you?? LIVE-LOVE-and be kind...ya' never know who needs a FRIEND! love-sigh-love-sigh-love

DOREEN AND DAVID!!! Didn't mean to leave you off the list of Melon friends I LOVE!!! So glad we got to spend Danville and the TLA shows in Philly together (ah, that crappy pizza and the sub-zero weather). One of the PMB fans recorded those shows and is working on getting me CDs... I will pass them along so we can have Christmas weekend 2000 to remember forever! Jimbo, my shopping buddy, we had quite a weekend: "authentic" cheese steaks at Jim's - witnessing all those crimes - especially the domestic assault with a cheese steak! Thanks for talking me into that funky scarf and those fabulous tights and shoes - you can be my fashion advisor any day!! We must go back sometime and get you those awesome boots! That was one of my favorite road trips of all time... Sigh, memory flash. Love y'all - talk to you soon! HUGS!

Everyone should do what I just did... visited the Melonpatch General Store and stocked up on my Melon goods... My first (and only) copy of "Squeeze Me" arrived in the mail today from a small record store in Hickory, NC (Selecter Music) - they were kind enough to hunt me down a copy - THANKS GUYS!! Hey Chad & Rob - David from the PMB crew wants y'all to e-mail or call him... E-mail me and I'll send you his cell #, etc. I'm still awaiting your return call Wolverine - hope you're ok! :\ As the news sinks in, I'm thankful for the friendships I've made through the Melonpatch... TERRI, Cara & Rob, Kristie, Captain, Christy (& family)... Cam, the other Amy-s, the Chapman family, Doug's mom, Terina, Sheree, Charity, Jenn, and everyone else I had the great fortune to meet in Greenville... PLEASE call/write if you find yourself near NY. You'll always be welcome here! Head Melon, keep updating that dates page so I can plan one last road trip (carry-on luggage this time!). Hugs to all!

Wow, I can't believe its over. I have been listening to you guys forever it seems. I have gotten so many others hooked on your sound and music so they could love it as much as I do. I even let my second graders listen to some songs and they just sing and dance all over the place! I wish you all the best of luck in the future and don't be strangers. I have so many memories of shows and autographs and conversations that I am sure you all don't remember but it touched me deeply. My favorite memory was of a New Years eve show at Ziggys and Doug poured Champaign up my nose. Thanks for everything!

I'm a huge fan of Eric Johnson, and I decided to check out your music when I went to see him in Atlanta. I'm really glad I did! Thanks for posting the upcoming dates, Dick. My wife wrote yesterday, now it's my turn. Like everyone else we will certainly miss the music and the live shows. I knew you guys were for real when you picked us out of the crowd on new year's eve at the Ritz in Raleigh and told the whole crowd about the e-mail (i.e. twins Faithless Me). I always knew the music was great, but after that day now I knew why. You'll never know how much that meant to us. Not only are you great musicians and songwriters but you are geniune. Those people are few and far between in life and I'm greatful to have gotten to know you guys over the last 8 years. I wish you all the best "Yes the sun will shine again-----and you're where you wanna be". Good luck, and you better get up to Boston one last time before April. One last thing, can you put the chords for the songs on Great Procrastinator on the web site so i can learn them on the guitar, sounds like I won't be seeing you live anymore so I can't steal them (ha,ha).CM LIVES ON AND THERE IS A FREEDOM TOWN. PEACE GUYS!!!!!!! YOU BETTER SHOW UP IN BOSTON!!!!

Hey SAPIA, I loves you too. Damn we had some good times. Bailey's, AsheVegas, Western (ha, ha), etc. I enjoyed all the hell we raised when it came to CM. We ruled every venue we ever went to. You and HUTCH would crack me up attempting to play darts, but were so drunk you couldn't hit the board if your life depended on it. All that's left are holes in the door! And remember FOGLE???? The three of you would sing "Sweet Tea" to the top of your lungs and then HUTCH would get "Land of Oz" going and it was all over. I believe we got written up a few times too, but it was so worth it. Then there was the time that HUTCH staged dived to CM at Bailey's. That was a new one, stage diving to Cravin' Melon! You guys are nuts and I love it. Then there was the time we set out to go to the show in AsheVegas and you drove off in your big blue hooptie leaving HUTCH and I in the parking lot staring at each other like idiots. Thanks for coming back to get us by the way. All I can say is we drank enough Newcastle that we should have an ocean named after us. Oh.....I love me! Well, thanks for being the best brother in the world. I love you so much and don't worry, we'll always have CM in our hearts and in our cd players. Let the good times roll! Peas and melons hunny pie!

I never will forget the day I was driving home from Aiken SC to Charleston SC and heard "Come Undone" on the radio. That Sunday, 96Wave played the Red Clay Harvest CD in its entirety. I was hooked. I have introduced many of my friends and family to the band since that day and have made many long trips to see the band perform (after moving up north). I saw JJ and Rick leave the band and was amazed at the continued growth of the band. Doug's voice never ceases to amaze me. I've listened to every CD thousands of times and have heard the evolution of Jimbo's guitar with time. I know that music causes the heart of the band to beat. I will remember fondly talking to all the band members in venues from the Red Lion Pub (Augusta, GA), the Attic (Greenville, NC), Reicher Theatre (Towson, MD) to the Shriners Hall in Columbia, SC. I have to say Thank You to all the band members for the joy you have brought me, my family, and friends over the past few years. Doug, I know how hard it was for you to make this decision. I wish you the best. Only your heart can tell you what to do. Memories of you all will live on in pictures as well as in the music you have left behind. Gary, thank you for the picture taken at the Attic last year with Branford Marsallis, it rests on my desk next to the one of me with the band in Herndon, VA. I wish you all the best of luck in life. THANKS to the band and to Dick for the joy you have brought to my life. With fond memories.........James.

As a new fan of the band I am sad to see them go. I saw them open for PMB back in September in Rochester, and have been a great fan ever since (waiting for them to make a stop back in Western New York). Now I fear that may never happen and I am saddened. You guys were great, I'll always remember that one concert. I hope you rock on forver. Love and peace to all.

well i heard through our crew that Doug had made this call to move on after April. Well i have been a Cravin Melon fan ever since we got the chance to open for them at Ziggys and thats when i realized what an amazing band CM was and even more amazing was how nice the band was to all of us. I will never forget that and that is how i hope to treat all people wether playing with them or not. Doug you have an opne invitation (as well as all CM members) to come hang with us on the road and play all you want, who knows maybe you ll get the itch to come out for a week or two a few months or years from now. without a doubt your fans (including pat mcgee band) will miss your music and your shows...i have the ultimate respect for Doug and the entire Cravin Melon operation. rock on doug. as for the rest of ya...you guys better all keep in touch...later on hey so can we get you guys to play with us at least once more before the last gig's curtains fall? hope so. pat mcgee

Dear Wondering: The Lincoln Theater is being renovated as we speak and is slated to open on or around Feb. 2. Jim, et al from Five Points have been working on this since live music was banned from Five Points the end of Nov. Sources tell me that Locolm Theater is located somewhere in the vicinity of the Warehouse and will be very cool(sorry, but no phone number yet -- will post as soon as I find out). See you all there!

I sit here writing through tear-stained eyes Trying to comprehend the reasons why All I've come to know and love over the past few years Must come to an end and fuel my fears. You've invaded my heart, you've invaded my soul Yet when I felt despair, you made me whole My life changed for the better the night we first met That's a moment in time I pray I never forget. You'll never know how much your friendship and music means to me As I sit here writing while I can no longer see. Through tear-stained eyes I try to comprehend The reasons why such a good thing must come to an end. I send you best wishes, godspeed and such Just remember the lives you have still yet to touch. I will always love you and the friendships I've made along the way. I will see you all very soon, And by the way Doug, I still think you could have hung the moon.

It's been difficult to concentrate on work today after learning the sad (albeit not totally unexpected) news. But I have to say, reading everyone's Melon memories has really cushioned the blow. While we'll miss your live presence terribly, knowing you've touched so many people’s lives for so long has to bring a smile to your faces. The best thing about moving from NY to SC was discovering the wonderful world of live music and this fantastic band called Cravin’ Melon. Everything that I found so magical and special about the south was captured in your music. I never would have visited all those cities in NC & SC without the incentive of seeing you guys at a show. Nor would I have so many wild stories about those trips to share with everyone I meet – making new friends while standing in line hoping to get in at a sold-out show in Raleigh… the disgusting feel of warm pee on my feet at the show in Charlotte… the $1.50 24 oz. Icehouse night at the Hard Rock in Myrtle… dragging 6 cousins and an uncle to shows in Richmond… being 1 of 15 people there to see you in Charlottesville… the five-finger discounts in Columbia… the "one for yes, two for no" night in Charleston… Your music will continue to live in our hearts and CD players for years to come. Thank you for sharing you amazing musical talents and sparkling personalities with us.

I don't know what to say except that you will be incredibly sadly missed. You have been in my thoughts lately because I am a month away from my due date with Tom's and my third baby. The twins, Zach and TJ, are almost 4 years old and were born 21/2 months prematurely. Doug, you know what CM's music did for us during their traumatic birth. I ve thought a lot about that time and will continue to thank you for your gift of music. We will certainly miss y'all. I would love to know where everyone in the band is going from here. I wish the most happiness and success in whatever is coming your way. Please know your time as Cravin Melon was MORE than well spent, and I'm sure your future will be filled with different kinds of successes and adventures. I've been a Cravin Melon fan since mid 1994 when I saw them with bands like Hootie, FTJ, Athenaeum, etc. and was afraid this day was coming. I remember being crushed when Dillon Fence disbanded in 1995, but this hurts much worse. I just want to say to the band what great times my friends and I have had going to your shows and absolutely wearing out our CD Players listening to your music. On a tour of Germany, a group of Americans had a pub put my CM disc into the CD player so they could hear what I was privately enjoying on my portable. I will never forget the "World's Largest Office Party" in Charlotte when an old ECU friend, Rob Clay, told me he was joining my favorite band Cravin Melon. To Doug and Jimbo I say thanks for hanging in there for so long, I'm sure it was an incredible ride although difficult at times. Rob, you've been awesome, I didn't know you were so talented. To Gary and Chad, thanks for all you've done to make CM an even better band. For all the radio stations who played Cravin Melon, thank you so much. For the radio stations that chose not to, you didn't see the light and missed the opportunity to make a difference in a tired music scene. Who knows what the future will bring, two weeks ago I saw Dillon Fence after a five year layoff. I will see Cravin Melon often the next three months, hopefully I will see them at some point after that too. Thanks for all the GREAT times!

Okay, WOW! Well, my mouth hurts from hanging open all morning, but I am now able to post a little something. I have so much to say that you'll probably find me posting quite a bit in the next several days as all the awesome memories keep coming to mind. I first wanna say that I UNDERSTAND! I have always admired you guys for touring all over the place, ALL THE TIME, and have always thought it takes a special group of people to stay together in the manner that you guys have shown us over the past 8 years. You have shown melonseeds far and wide what dedication and love for life truly is. However, it has come time for you to move on and I respect that. I myself have been in your position of having to quit something I love and move on, so I feel your pain but acknowledge your guts and glory. I think your positive attitude about all you have accomplished and all the lives you've touched is AWESOME! This will continue to lead you all to another road of success, whatever that may be. All I know, is that I will miss you guys so........ much! I first got to know you crazy guys way back when, up in the Western North Carolina Mountains. Remember the little hole in the wall or was it a big rat trap called Bailey's? Ha! Ha! I never knew what great things you would bring into my life: great tunes (of course), friends, the meeting of new friends, flyers, flyers and more flyers (thanks for trusting my creative side!), lots of laughs, dancing (FRC rules!), lots of Sweet Tea, taking a shot of "birdshit" w/ Jimbo, roadtrips to another show, etc. I could go on forever! The point here is, that there is nothing better than getting pumped up for a CM concert. You guys could always get all my friends in one place for a great time and you never even knew you were doing it, or did you? Thanks you so much for sharing your talent and providing me with such joy. Thanks for making my social calendar look so...... busy too, ha! ha! I have also really enjoyed being a part of the street team. I have met some great people along the way while "working it" to hang up and pass out another flyer! Ha! Ha! When people would ask me about you guys, I would tell them about your sweet sounding tunes and that I enjoyed helping you out and promoting your awesome music b/c you guys were so nice and laid back and FUN! You treat everyone like family and appreciate our hard work in promoting the shows. Every show was a guaranteed damn good time! You are truly nice guys which is hard to find! I wish you all the best and hope that you will keep your fans updated on all the interesting things you pursue in the future. Until we meet again, have a happy day. Peas and Melons!!!!!!

Singin' Melon, well spoken. It really gives the lyrics to Faithless Me a new meaning. Since guys are not supposed to be "emotional", I'll just throw out a few highlights in my CM memories (to date...)--first, there's the HOB at Myrtle Beach last summer...ahhh, the gal in the Hawaiian-print skirt! You guys really made the new CD come to life that night! Next, was the show in Danville a few months back...first time I saw Amy, and what a rendition of Faithless Me. That was also the first night I heard Walter Wolfman Washington's song! Still my greatest memory has to be from this past New Year's Eve...I got to meet Cam, the music was great, and I had a lot of fun just hanging out with Doug, Rob, Jimbo, Chad, Gary, and Dick (all the while hoping the "Weekend Wife" didn't pass out in public!). You guys are great, and I wish you all the best...and it really says a lot when you can bring so many people together just to hear you guys "...singin' songs up on a stage..." We've still got a few months to get crazy! --The Captain

Okay y'all! First of all; we thought it better that Dick make the announcemnent because he could be more objective and possibly not as emotional as myself. No one including myself could even begin to understand why I have to do this. It's not just the money, although I have truly eeked out an existence over the last eight years. Thank you to my family and my good friends for loaning me money when I needed it! Secondly; I am not getting married or even dating anyone, however this is something that I would like to do at some point in my life. It's just very hard when you're broke, in debt, and never around. Third; I am not going country, that has absolutely nothing to do with why I have to leave. I just need some structure in my life. I'm 34 years old and there are alot of things that I still want to do, and I just can't see them happening while living like we do on the road. It's not the music! You'll never know how much I enjoy playing with JIMBO, ROB, GARY, and CHAD; and how much joy you all have brought into my life by being at the shows and especially talking to me before or after. Also, do you think that I won't miss being out on the road with Scotty and Keith, or the relationship that I have with Dick, our manager. Don't even presume to know why I am doing this, because even I don't. I can't see myself being without it, yet I can't see myself continuing even more. This is the hardest decision that I have ever had to make, not only because of the impact on myself, but because it also affects everyone else in the band and those involved with the band. And now I get to see how much it affects you! I am very sad already, so don't get ANGRY! That just makes me even more sad; because if you cannot understand that I have to do this, then you probably didn't understand why I played in a band in the first place. I love music, especially ours, and I DO LOVE TO SING, but the people I have met and the friendships I have made both with fans and other bands are what make me tick. Anyone who has taken the time to talk to me over the last eight years will know that. Let me now thank you for allowing me to be a part of your lives and giving me the encouragement to chase a dream. Now it is just time for another dream. Thank you all for your support, you will never know your effect on my life. As THE BEATLES and Double G say LOVE, LOVE, LOVE

Wow, gotta say this a real kick in the gut. I've been hanging out at places like Greenstreets and The Elbow Room since way before the Hootie guys were old enough to get in. I've seen lots of great bands come and go in the Columbia area but there has never been a band that I looked forward to seeing any more than Cravin' Melon. Can't really explain why, I guess it's because they always make it look like so much fun to do what they are doing. I'll really miss this band. I wish them all the success in the world in whatever they pursue. I just hope that wherever the future finds them, either together or apart, that they will continue to visit us here in Columbia. As Ole' Bob says.."Thanks for the memories." Acta est fabula, plaudite!

I agree with my friend ScottyD, even though we are all very disappointed in the decision to end Cravin Melon, let's keep everything positive. As the youngest member of the Mebane Gang(only 37) I will really miss going out to all the shows and acting young again. I remember my first Cravin show in Raleigh, NC at Lake Boone Country Club in 1996. I knew they would be something special and I was not disappointed. I've seen over 30 shows at least in the last 5 years and they only got better with time. It's hard to pick a favorite show but Ziggy,s on New Year's Eve stands out as does the Danville outdoor festival a few years back when the Mebane gang got to share an hour or so with Doug just hanging out a enjoying a cold beverage or twelve. We'll be at the last show no matter where it is and will have the time of our lives. Good luck to all the Melons and God Bless.

My best wishes to all the Melon boys. Thanks for the good times and memories! I'll look forward to seeing you all at Cats Cradle. I've already rounded up a crew of 10+ to watch the show. I'll drink one or a six pack for the band.

I remember my first show--Summer '98 at Lifeguard's (now called Ziggy's By the Sea) in Atlantic Beach. I was on vacation with friends (Brooke and Bonnie among them) and on a whim decided to check out this band we had remembered hearing on the radio. The club was packed to the gills and it was so hot in there we literally struggled to breathe. The heat was the most torturous I have ever experienced. But what a show it was. But I also remember that it wasn't Sweet Tea or Come Undone that got me hooked that night, it was that perfect groove in Land of Oz. As for a favorite show there are so many, it's hard to choose. But one that always sticks out in my mind is the first Cat's Cradle show after the Ziggy's Blossom "controversy" that Scott mentioned. It was a show for the fans as I saw it--they played nearly every song requested by the fans during that two week period after the Ziggy's gig, including Down Without a Home, the first Camelot I had ever heard live, and Jimbo doing the original Save Me. What a band.

Wow, this is what I get for falling asleep at 9 pm last night in front of the television and not waking up until this morning. (Bad nightmare, maybe?!) I don't know what makes me sadder, the announcement or the evil remarks some people have made on this guestbook. I know there are hearts breaking all over the country, but our guys have to do what's best for THEM. Don't be selfish and say that the band wasted your time, for it's the time that they've spent with us that has produced the music and the memories and the friendships... THEY shared themselves with us - and they didn't have to. I am thankful for the gifts they have brought to this world and I am so happy to call Doug, Jimbo, Rob, Gary & Chad (and Dick & Keith & Scotty) my friends! I agree with Scott D... get your CDs and put 'em in a time capsule, 'cause everyone everywhere deserves a little Melon in their lives!! PLEASE COME UP NORTH FOR ONE LAST SHOW / PIZZA PIE!! One chapter closes... another begins... Hugs, y'all!

I LOVE YOU GUYS!, NY USA - Wednesday, January 10, 2001 at 11:32:49 (EST)
**ATTENTION ALL MELONHEADS** Yes, we are all devastated and emotionally distraught by Doug's decision. I'm sure it wasn't made overnight and I'm sure it wasn't made without a lot of thought and soul searching. This has been coming for years. Anyone who had the chance to talk at length with Doug over the last 2-3 years, knew that Cravin' wouldn't last forever. Anyone at the Ziggy's show in Winston Salem back in 98' heard a "country" version of Blossom that sounded unbelievable. I could tell right then that a country versus rock n' roll struggle was going on within the band, or at the least, somebody was not 100% happy. I ask, no I beg you all to accept this positively. While you have the right to be hurt, angry, etc. it really does no good to lash out at Doug/Cravin. Heck, I've seen over 30 shows myself, and as the 44 year old "senior Melonhead", I feel it my responsibility to stop the outrage. Gather your positive thoughts about Cravin: where you were when you heard "Sweet Tea" for the first time, or when you heard "Come Undone" on the radio for the first time, their best show you saw, etc., how much the music has touched you, and post those thoughts here. Please melonheads, let's leave the outrage and negativity to others, and dwell on the positive. Do like I did, order two more copies of all five CD's so your kids and grandkids can have a chance to feel what we have. Peace. scottd

WOW! This little melonseed is so sad today! I will have to write more later when I can think more clearly. In the meantime, is anyone interested in a support group? Cuz' I think we're all gonna need some serious bereavement counseling or something.

Thank you guys for all of the memories. I'll never forget the famous chair at the HOB Britney Spears sat in the night before you guys performed. I can still remember the first time i met Doug...i was not old enough to get in the club but he was nice enough to come outside with autographed pictures and stand and talk to me and my friend. That meant a lot and ever since that day i have been a melonhead. Although it was only 3 years ago that i started following you guys there are a lot of memories of your shows and backstage antics. Thanks for all the good times you will truly be missed on the road by all. peas and melons....

i first heard of doug's decision 30 minutes after the windjammer show on the 5th. it is a surprise to everyone including now our families, fans, and friends. it's hard not to feel immense disappointment after such a long fought battle. at the same time, it was a blessed ride. it's still not over, nor will it ever really be. i guess i do owe the final melon@ 11. it may take a few minutes......

My heart is broken. It's very sad to think of a world without Cravin' Melon. I've been enjoying your music since 1995 and will seriously miss you. I am so glad I have been able to see so many of your shows over the years. I'm particularly thankful that I have had the opportunity to meet you guys this year and learn first-hand that you are some of the nicest, most down-to-earth guys I have known. I see a lot of traveling in my future over the next few months to catch every show I can. I wish you all the best.

I sure will miss you guys. It has always been with great anticipation for me and my friends your return to Ziggy's. I wish you could have made it all the way, but I am glad to say that you have made a mark in my life. You have the best sound and live performance! You will be missed!
