It's with a heavy heart that i have to be the bearer of sad news for all you melonfans. For the past two years, the band has struggled to maintain our fan base and touring and recording profile. Without the support of a major label promotion and touring financial advantages, it has become a diminshing scenario for Cravin' Melon. Doug has decided that it's time to hang up the hat and pursue other things. That being said, the band has decided that without Doug, it just wouldn't be Cravin' Melon. Therefore we are annoucing the band's retirement effective Mid April. We are going to try to hit every market that we can between now and April 15, so keep and eye on the Dates Page of the website and come on out to bid the band farewell. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank ALL of our fans throughout the world, from the bottom of our hearts. It was you, the fans that kept us going over the years. We'd also like to thank Scotty and Keith, the the street team, and all of the family members that have supported us over the past 8 years. We had a good run at it, we made a lot of folks happy and we had some great shows along the way. We're sorry to see it come to a close, but that's where we are. Cravin's music has touched a lot of folks. Let's remember all the good times fondly, play the CDS and be thankful we had a chance to do this.

C) I am incredibly curious to know who y'all would like to feature in "The Babes of the Melonpatch Calendar" . . . (Headmelon, I think that this is a POSITIVE discussion question -- don't you?)
I think that's it.

B) In the fellas defense, Jacksonville, Fl is a much easier drive down I-95 than NYC and beyond up north. Also, I'd be willing to bet that Gary has to be in Miami on the 17th to play with Hootie! (Look on the bright side, Hootie will be in Conn. in May.)

I just wanted to add that the PEOPLE on this guestbook... who frequent the Melonpatch... are THE BEST! Nowhere else would complete strangers offer up $$ to send their favorite band up North for a few begging fans... Then again, we're not strangers... we're all friends... family even... bonded together by our love for 5 guys and the music and fun memories they've brought to our lives. HUGS TO EVERYONE! The Northern Melonseeds love y'all and appreciate your help for our cause! :)

Rita, thanks for the shameless begging on our behalf - we appreciate it AND your piggy banks!!! Christy, I have a Nissan Pathfinder - between the 2 of us we could fit most the gear (and Melons)... CAPTAIN CHINBEARD - yours was the greatest idea of ALL!!! If we couldn't afford a venue, maybe I could use my faculty standing at the college to reserve our basketball arena on campus or our theatre... or my living room! Let's make it a Northeastern Melon Festival!!! All the Melonheads and 'seeds and family and friends could make a weekend of it... Joining up with PMB is still an option. Don't make us feel like the "LESS-THAN-WORTHY" fans... you're traveling to Florida, which is further away (distance-wise)... Give us the chance to sell the tix and do the PR and we'll give you the best Northern-style send off ever... PLEASE.

HMMMMMM, raffle off Doug, what a concept. I just happen to have two piggy banks in front of me. I will gladly cash them in, and donate all proceeds too the northern quest for one last show. I've always known they would be loved up north and I'm willing to share them one more time. Come on Doug one more road trip north before settling down. Ok, I've done some shameless begging for you Amy, I hope it works. It was hoot to see my email name in the newspaper, it was a very nice article. "Faithless Me" is now and forever my favorite Melon song, followed very closely by "Freedom Town". I tried to win the Lotto with no success, give me some numbers, if I win then the finacial problems are no more. I'll keep trying while your still playing. Only a few more weeks till you hit Florida again and I can't wait, the FreeBird Cafe' loves Melon, and has plenty of room for a huge crowd, do I hear maybe an early spring break. The owner of Tiger Town must be independantly wealthy, why else would he not want Melon to play a final show there. Let's see Melon playing in Clemson, could there be a beer shortage, that has to be the problem. Is there a Doctor in the house? Jimbo, I hope you plan on doing some major birthday celebrating with me. "GO Team Black". Till the 16th be safe.

Auctioning the guys? Umm, I think I speak for most of us males, that wouldn't do the trick for us. What we should do is start a fund for those poor pitiful souls freezing their assets off up north. We could all pitch in some cash, charter a bus or two or a dozen, and take the 'Melon boys, and the entire Melonhead south up north for a massive 'Melon Ball. Whatever cash is left over goes to the Melon Debt Fund...either that or a babes of the Melonpatch calendar! --The Captain

They'll probably pay off some of those debts that the band has accquired over the years. I assume it has added up with the lawyers, the record company's bs, etc. Anyway, I kinda like the idea of raffling off Doug. I'd be robbing banks for the ticket money to secure myself a win.

It's his red acoustic Tak. They had some equipment stolen out in California which included Doug's brown guitar; they bought new replacement equipment upon their return. Then another idiot stole that new guitar, and Doug got the red Tak. If I'm wrong please tell us the real story of the guitar. It will make it more intriguing and sell more tickets!

Hello Melon Heads, my name is Matt Oates and I live right outside of Memphis, Tn, in Cordova. I came to your show last semester when you played in Nashville with Sister Hazel. My friends and I got there late because of other problems and we unfortunately missed your show. But we did see you sing some with Sister Hazel at the end of the show, and we talked to you after the concert and bought some shirts. But anyways, one of my good friends Michael McMaster, just told me the bad news that you all are going to stop playing. And what was even worse, is that we aren't going to be able to see you all perform agian before you quit. You may not realize it, but you have a lot of fans here in Memphis. And we would really like it if you could somehow squeeze Memphis into your tour schedule. We really want to see you perform. There is a great place on Beale Street called the New Daisy, that would be perfect for you all to play. Well, I just wanted to write you and tell you how much we are all going to miss you all and how much we hope that you will come to Memphis to play. You all have some great songs like "Sweet Tea" and "Land of Oz". I hope everything works out for you all and the best of luck. Thanks Matt Oates PS-Memphis will miss Cravin Melon!

Band's breakup leaves Melon fans cravin' more By Daniel Goldberg STAFF WRITER dgoldber@greenvillenews.com The melodic melon patch must have gone silent for at least a moment on the afternoon of Jan. 9 as the shocking — and if not shocking, certainly unwelcome — announcement settled into the bellies of Cravin' Melon fans. Straightforward, appreciative and lined with disappointment, a simple letter to loyal visitors of the Upstate band's guestbook at www.melonpatch.com revealed that Cravin' Melon will retire as a quartet effective in mid-April. And if that moment of silence did in fact exist, it was quickly replaced by an outpouring of emotion from all varieties of melon. Fans with e-mail user names like "Faithlessme" and "Slksnflwrs" — cribbed from two of the band's most popular songs — bombarded the guestbook with sadness, frustration, disappointment and even anger. Anecdotes recalling nights in dark music halls with fellow melonheads or conversations at the bar with the band were shared by fans in Taylors, Raleigh, Nashville, New Orleans and Worcester, Mass. Good-byes were signed as "Melon Fan Forever," and far away boosters haggled for one last show in their city with sign-offs like "Not-giving-up-yet, New York." As the band learned a long time ago and their fans will remind them until that inevitable day in April, devoted Cravin' Melon fans are loud and imaginatively demonstrative. It was the rest of us that were the problem. "The main thing, besides the obvious enjoyment of the music, was their ability to connect with the audience," says Taylors resident Brian Guzik, a veteran of more than 50 Cravin' Melon concerts. "Even after the show, taking the time to ask your name and remember it. That says a lot about a band." Local fans may still run into members of Cravin' Melon at concerts from time to time, but after April it will have to be someone else's show. "It makes me feel bad, like I'm letting them down," says Cravin' Melon lead singer Doug Jones of the decision he has agonized over for months. "But I know I'm not. I know that those people — as sad as they make it out to be and as sad as I am about it — know that I've got to do what I've got to do. And everything will be alright. "I said in the little thing I wrote (on the guestbook), I can't see myself not doing this, but I can't see myself doing it anymore. It's like a scale that's just teetering. You've got to look at the realistic side of it, but then you've got to look at the emotional side, too. Unfortunately, the realistic side just weighs too much." According to Jones, money troubles played a big part in "the realistic side." Founded by Greenville native Jones, guitarist Jimbo Chapman, original bassist JJ Bowers and original drummer Rick Reames in 1993, Cravin' Melon became a mainstay on the Southeastern club scene with it's melodic Hootie-era pop. Mercury Records signed the band in 1996, releasing one studio album — 1997's "Red Clay Harvest" — before a corporate buyout by Polygram freed the Melons of their contract. Independent again, Cravin' Melon released "The Great Procrastinator" in 2000, but struggled to promote it without radio play or the deep pockets of a major label. "The money situation has been difficult for a while, but it's something you want to do," says Jones, whose decision led to a consensus by bandmates Chapman, bassist Rob Clay and drummer Gary Greene. "You're chasing down a dream that you've wanted forever; it's kind of hard to give up on. There are just things that I want to do. It just got to that point for me. I'm 34 years old. How long can I continue to do this to where, when I finally quit, I'm still going to have enough time left to get another job?" For the better part of a decade, the road has been a job for the foursome, both in Cravin' Melon and various other projects dating back to Jones and Chapman's days at Clemson. Music has allowed Jones to wander far from his Taylors home, allowing opportunities he says will be missed. "Meeting people that are of the same frame of mind because they're doing the same thing and chasing the same dream. And getting to meet the fans. Being in Little Rock, Ark. and running into someone in a bar, having a conversation with them and then saying, 'You know, if we had grown up in the same hometown, we probably would have been buds.' Just things like that I never would have experienced if I hadn't done this." But beyond the memories and realizations that touring life couldn't last forever, Jones says none of the four individuals in the band really knows what's next. Cravin' Melon isn't the first popular regional band to fall to such a fate and it won't be the last. According to the band's manager Dick Hodgin, the role of record label and radio support can't be underestimated in deciding a group's survival. "Radio goes by way of what is popular and record companies hold the cards of what is popular," says Hodgin, who produced Hootie and the Blowfish's first two independent releases. "They have the ability to ram something down radio's throat with the right tools if MTV is benevolent enough to give them a nod. But MTV is like, 'we're not going to play it until there's a radio story.' And radio is like, 'we're not going to play it until there's an MTV story.' So it's a horrible vicious cycle for bands to get into, but that's the way it is right now." Jones and company were aware that post-Mercury life would be an uphill battle. He says people often suggested that Cravin' Melon tweak its sound just a bit to fall in line with the trends, but the foursome was unwilling to compromise its signature sound. "It definitely was not a creative thing," Jones says of the retirement decision. "The hardest part about what we're doing is that we've only had this particular line-up for going on a year. Everything was becoming better with the band; the band is the best it's ever been as far as playing and singing and all of that. It's just that the attitude surrounding everything was so much to overcome. It's hard to get excited about so many things when you're just being beat down by everything around you." And still he refuses to blame outside forces for the band's demise. "You just say, 'Hey, if it was meant to be, it would have happened.' It just wasn't for some reason or another." But Cravin' Melon's fans won't have any trouble finding meaning in their eight-year roadtrip with the band. "There was one night at Tiger Town Tavern in Clemson," says Guzik. "They had played and the bartenders were clearing the place. I was talking to Doug and a bouncer came over to ask if I was with the band. Doug said, 'He can stay.' That meant a lot."

For the record, I SWEAR that wasn't me who ranted at Tom regarding the "Northeast" shows (or lack there of)... I get upset when New Yorkers get bad reps... I ALWAYS sign my name to the stuff I write, whether anyone agrees with me or not! FYI Tom, the Pat McGee Band is playing the Northeast US and then the West Coast in Feb & March (look for them on Craig Kilborn Mon 1/29)... no NC shows planned yet. Feel free to take a road-trip to NYC to see PMB, Sister Hazel & Vertical Horizon on Feb 23rd... Cynde (from Boston, MA!) & I will be there! Later Melons (no shameless plea tonight... I'm too tired to beg).

Hi guys--from Campbell University. You should come back for a farwell show!! Yea right. (I'll probably get kicked out just for this thought) Anyway, this is the first time I've visited your web site--it's great. I was reading the Spectator today and saw that you guys were playing Cats Cradle on Feb. 2nd. I definetly will be there. I sure will miss your shows--had a lot of fun. I wished I'd known earlier that you were playing tonight in Raleigh. Oh well, see you guys later.

Ok now i'm pissed!!! No northern dates? What the @#$% is that all about ?We deserve at least one show. Surely Pat mcgee can squeeze them in one more time. I can't believe the band can't make one last road trip north, god knows we've done many road trips for them. For christ sake my wife and I, who was 7 months pregnant at the time, drove 3 hours to see them in October. Look the guys know my wife and I very well and no disrespcect is meant by this, but come on the northeast deserves it.

Couldn't agree with you more Head Melon. I think there are four songs on TGP that could become "hits". It's amazing to me with some of the crap on the radio, that more stations haven't picked up on songs from TGP. After making numerous calls to stations in Atlanta and Charlotte over the years, it has become obvious they don't pay attention to their listeners. In 1994 99X in Atlanta literally broke Hootie into the mainstream, but now all they want to play are artists who scream obscenities into a mic. Leslie Fram may have had a midas touch in 1994, but no more. Thanks to all the radio stations in the Carolinas who gave Cravin Melon airplay, to the others who never gave them a shake I believe you missed one great opportunity.

Ran into an old friend from HS back in September at a bar... told me about his favorite new band - The Pat McGee Band. Unfortunately, he had to work late that night y'all played with PMB at Irving on my b-day, so he missed your set. Tonight I was singing with him and his twin bro (no, it's not Evan & Jaron!) at a bar on the beach (their ususal Thursday night gig) and I told him of Melon's pending retirement... he's disappointed... he said "Now I'll never get to see them play!" :( YET ANOTHER REASON Y'ALL SHOULD COME PLAY THE NORTHEAST ONE LAST TIME!! Shameless? Maybe. Loyal? You betcha! Disappointed? Getting there...

It seems that some people are looking to place blame instead of being thankful for what we have left ahead of us. I don't think anyone should point fingers or try to decide who is the best fan. Everyone involved knows they probably could have done a little more, tried a little harder, made a promo opportunity workout, attended one more show, brought a few more friends, etc.-you get the idea. But what seems to be lost in this are these wonderful guys who have sacrificed SOOOOO MUCH so that we could enjoy their music. They have given up their time with their families to take it on the road and try to make it. It isn't all about being up there singing for 2 hours, it's about driving there, setting up the equipment, sound check, waiting to go on, performing, meetin' & greetin', tearing down the equipment, loadin' it up & hittin' the road to do it all over again; all the while missing wives, girlfriends, moms, dads, nieces, nephews, and a precious son (go Drew!). So instead of the negative attitudes and competition, let's just do the best we can to show Cravin' Melon that we love them and will support them no matter what. So, if you can make it to every show from here on out-GREAT!!! If you've been to only one or one hundred shows-GREAT!!! Off the soapbox now.....Peace Out!!!

please, everyone,....let's not get into a "who was the best fan " tiff....simply put, you need radio airplay to expand the fanbase, we didn't get it...the record companies weren't into The Great Procrastinator simply because they couldn't get it on the radio.."NO HIT SINGLES" they said.....even though i STILL believe that there are at least 3 on TGP...record companies aren't much interested in stuff they can't get on the radio...we weren't the "soup du jour".......when i look back on all the archives of the website (for a looooonnnnnggggggg time) it makes me feel really great to know that you fans really loved TGP.......we're all still really proud of it.......thank you...

I find it hard to believe that because we as fans can't make it to EVERY show, much less SEVENTY of them, that we aren't considered true fans. You can question where I was on the nights CM played anytime you'd like. More than likely, I was working in order to make a living. Regardless of the fact that I wasn't a FRC and don't post messages on this board every day, I am a TRUE fan. I love the music and the guys. The few shows I have been to have been well worth my time. I am just as heart-broken that the band is breaking up, but I don't think it is soley based on lack of fan participation. For those of you who are able to afford trips all over the US to see the bad, congratulations. Wish I had that option. But, I don't. However, I will continue to play their music and spread the word and continue my daily living, working in shows when possible.

With 3 graduate and undergraduate classes to teach (total of 8 sections), a clinical practice site and over 230 students, there isn't much vacation time available until the semester ends. Unfortunately, by that time, Melon will be no more... Just because we Northerners have been ROYALLY dissed, doesn't mean we're going to stop begging... This "bemoaning fan" has always been there, as well as most of the people on this board. When was the last time YOU (Mr./Mrs. Greenville) went to see them in NY, or FL. What's the furthest you've traveled? This isn't the fans' fault. How caulous. I mean, would you be so rude to someone who just lost a family memeber? "Well, you didn't come over to see them last week, so why are you upset that they're gone. You obviously don't care." Think! Oh, and Resh, you are most welcome. It's been a pleasure having you for a road trip partner and I hope we can continue with the antics. I still think my favorite show though will always be the first Visualite show. Man, I've never seen them so on fire. I just hope that girls nose healed OK.

If I am crazy enough to drive 7 1/2 hours away to hear Cravin' Melon play, then I can certainly drive to Greenville to listen to Doug sing. It should be someone's job to inform the fans, so we can be supportive. (I know this website is for the band, but "all for one & one for all!") SHAMELESS PLEA FOR MELON - 01/17/01: Dear Doug, Jimbo, Rob, Gary & Chad, It has come to our attention that in order to play one last show anywhere up North much funding is necessary. I, Cynde, Christy and the other LOYAL fans who reside in this area of the US will guarantee paying attendees if you give us a date. I am teaching ~220 students at St. John's this semester alone... We should be able to fill a place without any problems. We're even willing to dig deep into our pockets (same as paying for an airline ticket, rental car and hotel)... Well guys I hate to hear the news about the break up. I just wish there was something that I could do to help you make it where you need to be. I don't know what the problem is, I see a lot of people are upset but if all these people are upset then why is the fan base down. I know a few people in this small town are going to miss listening to you live. I know we still have the CD's but it is nothing like listening to you live. I know we will make a couple of shows before the end, I just wish it was after tax season so I could go to more. I have really enjoyed the concerts that I have seen. I read where one guy was talking about the advertising, I noticed that Rock 101 quit playing and pushing yaw shortly after the cd came out. I think that this is terrible because you are hometown boys, except the weirdo from NC(ha ha). Maybe thats what it was the UNC boy kept the crowds away. Just kidding Rob you know I like you a lot. I hope that we break the streak tonight in the Dean Dome. (Upset maybe). Gary email me when you get a chance. Doug heard the National Anthem was great Saturday night at the hockey game. I remember that it was a hockey game that got us hooked on you guys, we heard you sing the Anthem and saw you at Connelly's afterwards. Good luck in your future.

As much as I'd like to make every show in my area, I have a daughter who's 18 and is home from college some of those weekends. She likes CM, too, but has been turned away from shows because she wasn't 21. I don't mind the roadtrip, but I won't ask her sit in the car and wait until the show is over.....

But we all know that Cravin Melon is not just ANY band. The combination of these eight guys (Scotty, Keith, and Dick included) is very UNIQUE and SPECTACULAR!! So whether you hear about a show thru the street team, word of mouth, radio, or website - JUST COME TO THE SHOWS. It is not April 15th yet, and these guys still need our support. And they definitely deserve it!!!! After all, these next three months have got to last for quite some time. A lot of memories that will last a life time can be made in the next three months. We will see you guys at some shows soon - very soon!

Actaully, the venues, clubs and promoters ARE responsible for ALL of the advertising. The street team, management, fans , word of mouth all account for ADDITIONAL hype on any particular show..and we all do as much of it as we possibly can. Because of the level that Cravin' is on, the actual DOLLARS spent on advertising by any club is NOT that of a national act. When you don't have a song on the radio to push, clubs and promoters are less likely to spend that coveted EXTRA money for radio spots....they're very expensive. Take a look at some of the shows we've done lately that had excellent radio push (like amos's in charlotte) and the turnout was huge....even though New Year's Eve's turnout was only moderate and we had coverage out the wazoo.....We always push for as much asvertising as any promoter will do...sometimes the $$ are just not there to do it , so we have to rely on alternate methods...

I've also observed less than stellar turnouts at several recent Melon shows. Perhaps, given the season, there were simply too many things going on at the same time. However, it could also be explained by the lack of promotion and advertising. Certainly, the Street Team is a big help, but they cannot be expected to do it all, nor should this website or venues be expected to do all the advertising. Shouldn't management or someone within the organization take the time and effort to ensure that shows are effectively advertised/promoted via radio, newspapers, and other forms of media? Even if that bit of business is conducted properly, word of mouth is one of the best forms of advertisement (i.e. one Melonseed tells a friend about the show, that friend tells another, etc., and voila! the seeds are sown). This is strictly my point of view, so please don't shoot the messenger.

I will probably get reamed for this, but as I look over all these comments from bemoaning fans, I can't help but think where all of you were on the nights the band HAS been playing since the CD came out. I was shocked (and embarassed) at some of the low turnouts. I live in Greenville NC and I couldn't believe how few people attended the show after the home-coming game. Maybe that has something to do with the break-up. I bought a copy of The Great Procrastinator and about 5 "friends" told me they already had itm downloaded and burned for "free" off Napster.

Go to www.zing.com Go to 'search' and instead of the preselected 'pictures' option select 'albums' and type in "Cravin' Melon." Choose an album. Once you get to the 'album cover' you can either use the 'next' arrows to proceed through the album or go to 'view' and select 'index.' The latter seems to be the quicker way to view the album in it's entirety. Now when I scanned the pics they were beautiful, but once uploaded onto Zing, they become a little blurry, so I appolgize. There are five albums on there as of now, but I'll be adding more and more as the weeks go on. Just wanted to share.

P.S. I also wanted to post to the FRC ... To the original, core, FRC: Myzze, Iris, Myra, April, Rita, Teri, Cara and Rob, Brooke, Bonnie, Keith, Kevin, Benji and Julie; the other FRC members that were later "inducted": Kristie, Angela, Jennifer, Eddie, Stephanie, Jules, and of course Mr. Chapman the 'Honorary' member ;-) ... -I thank you all so much for humoring my idea from the Cat's Cradle. It's been a wild and crazy ride that I will never, I repeat NEVER forget -from that show at the Cradle (where the boys played all the songs that we had requested) to the lasagna party (Rita makes a hell of a lasagna doesn't she?) to NYE 1999/2000 ("Mr. McCain can I shake your hand?") and many more. I love you all!

I remember the first time I ever heard the sounds of Cravin' Melon... Summer of 98: I was sitting at a place called Cafe On The Square in Jacksonville, FL to see my friends play. A friend of mine (Myzze Leigh) was there and talking about this band out of South Carolina -friends of hers that she had know for some time. It was so loud in there that I wasn't really sure what she was saying. Something about melons, the Wizard of Oz, and camels, maybe??? She wanted me to hear this band's CD that had just come out so we went outside and sat in her car. Yes, we were sitting outside of a venue that had LIVE music playing inside listening to a CD. We got to hear them 3 or 4 times a week. It's not every day that you get to listen to a fresh new sound -especially in Jax. I listen to every kind of genre so I kept an open mind even though the melon and camel thing had me worried. The first song I heard was this song about Australia. Being an 'Aussie wannabe' for the most part of my life, I instantly took a more serious listen. What I heard at that moment I will never forget. That voice! It was incredible! I hadn't heard a voice that made me feel the music like that since ... well never. The lyrics, the incredible guitar work, the thumping bass lines, the remarkable drum work, the harmonies ... what a blend! I was in love! Love at first sound? YES! And that love will NEVER fade away! We listened to bits and pieces of the rest of the album. Who were these people? Where could I get my own CD? Where do they play? And more importantly, when do I get to hear them LIVE? I was rambling off so many questions that she didn't even get a chance to answer them. I have since acquired their collection of CD's, various memorabilia, and a better sense of photography skills; and I have been given the greatest gift of all -FRIENDSHIP! To 'the boys': Your friendship and music has touched my life in more ways than you could ever imagine. Scotty (the hardest worker I've ever met in my life), Keith (the human teddy bear), Chad (the man who taught me how to run with style), Gary (may Bugs Bunny live forever and someday someone WILL stop and give him directions), Rob (light as a feather, light as a feather, light as a feather), Jimbo (nobody can open a door they way you can, and Sir, someday, I will get you that walker), and Doug (say my name, oooo... say it again), I LOVE YOU! Not just as Cravin' Melon, but as individuals. You are amazing people and I'm so glad that you are a part of my life. I pray that each of you finds true happiness! (P.S. Thanks Myzze -for everything!)

Just and observation dealing with Martin Luther King Jr blvd, on many occasions Myz and I would get lost going to a new venue. We'd stop to get directions that most of the time included Martin Luther King Jr blvd. This is only true in the south. We would always look for Martin Luther King Jr blvd and knew we'd find the boys. I guess Martin also was a Melon Fan. Just wanted to share that little story. Myzzes' car is equiped now with Melon radar.

Well, here it is...my long overdue contribution to the guestbook. I apologize for my tardiness, but I am writing now. In the interest of time and varying attention spans, I will try to keep my post somewhat short. Most people are sharing memories and "favorite" songs, so I will do the same. Surviving the unbearable heat of my first Cravin' Melon show at Lifeguards in Atlantic Beach remains an unforgettable memory. Other than dancing to some awesome music, I mostly remember focusing on the huge pitcher of "sweet tea" on the stage...Then there is the time that Rob "rescued" me from a "mean lady". He STOPPED playing Silk, leaned down into this girl's face and told her to leave me alone. Gotta love that!...Bonnie and I are still proud to have been the first two people to welcome and toast Gary into the band. That was in Johnson City at the hugely successful (ha/ha) Mentos gig...But above all,the memory I cherish the most are the lifelong friendships a ton of us have made. Now for "favorite" songs. This is truly an impossible task for me. I am not capable of "out-rating" a few CM songs over the rest. I mean, are we supposed to categorize them (old/new; live/cd; covers/original)!? They are all magical and meaningful, but here are a few I really love (in no order):
Camelot (new live version)--Freedom Town--Hey Sister--Someone--Sugar-Coated Goodbye--Piece of Mind--Blossom.
So here is my general audience post (as simple as possible). But I want to leave you with one thought that is especially true of the Cravin' Melon musical experience whether you've been to one show or dozens:

The Captain's List: Like the others, I have a list of 'Melon favorites, too. They are as follows: 5) Sugar Coated
Goodbye (what would this list be without a Cam song?), 4) Time That it Takes, 3) Runnin', 2) Silk Sunflowers,
and...drum roll please...1) Faithless Me. I realize that I've left off some of my other faves, but I had to shrink the
list to five to keep it short...still, Camelot, Blossom, and Great Procrastinator are right up there. As for my favorite
song to open a show, it's a tie between Camelot and Great Procrastinator (w/fog). A finisher? The Walter Wolfman

Well I've been bummed about the news since it came out but it has been a good run. I will deeply miss those great moments at all the shows I've been to. CM is one of the best bands I've had the privilege to know and enjoy. I've already watched the tape five-six times this weekend. We will truly miss you guys being out and about. I hope to catch you at least one more time before it's all over, so come to the Northeast PLEASE (I'll make another tape hahahah). I also hope that you guys try and make an appearance to MAM 2001. I'm sure Gary will be there so you all should just play the Sunday night party as you did last year that was awesome so please please try and make Charleston April 8th. As usual it will be a great time had by all and that would one more show I would be able to enjoy. You do know there is a very large fan base at MAM so bring it on we want to see you at MAM. Thanks again for all the great music and times you have given all of us. Thanks
