It's with a heavy heart that i have to be the bearer of sad news for all you melonfans. For the past two years, the band has struggled to maintain our fan base and touring and recording profile. Without the support of a major label promotion and touring financial advantages, it has become a diminshing scenario for Cravin' Melon. Doug has decided that it's time to hang up the hat and pursue other things. That being said, the band has decided that without Doug, it just wouldn't be Cravin' Melon. Therefore we are annoucing the band's retirement effective Mid April. We are going to try to hit every market that we can between now and April 15, so keep and eye on the Dates Page of the website and come on out to bid the band farewell. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank ALL of our fans throughout the world, from the bottom of our hearts. It was you, the fans that kept us going over the years. We'd also like to thank Scotty and Keith, the the street team, and all of the family members that have supported us over the past 8 years. We had a good run at it, we made a lot of folks happy and we had some great shows along the way. We're sorry to see it come to a close, but that's where we are. Cravin's music has touched a lot of folks. Let's remember all the good times fondly, play the CDS and be thankful we had a chance to do this.

Oh Turtle, what ARE we going to do with this whining piece of cheese?! Gouda, figure it out... we're all willing to chip in some $ to have you there by our sides singin' "Sweet Tea." Hell, you don't have to sing... just stand next to me and look cute! ;) Anyone else care to contribute to the Northernseed travel fund?! IT'S OFFICIAL: Christy & I have made our flight reservations, ordered show tickets and reserved a car... all that's left is a bed to sleep in. WOO HOO!! At least some of the Northernseeds will be represented at the final Melon shows. It looks like Chris won't be able to make it down :( and Cynde will be flaking out in favor of the Sister Hazel cruise (hey, there's only limited travel funds... wish I could be cruisin' too!)... what about you Tat2Dave? Since you're the road-trip king, we're expecting to see you there. At least my ladies Turtle & Miss July will be there... and Terri - thank you so much for my surprise gift - I LOVE it!! Erin - if you're interested, I'll send you my itinerary... just let me know. Captain, let's not get too excited about an Angel sandwich... we're a force to be reckoned with! Can't wait until Greenville... though, if I had my choice, I'd wish for time to stand still to avoid the end of this sweet Melon love affair. HUGS AND MELONS!!! Well, it looks like the fundraising has begun to get Gouda to Greenville! So, my sweet little Bro, give in, kick back and enjoy the ride and/or flight b/c your happy Northernseed @ss is coming to Greenville whether you like it or not! And don't argue w/ me or I'll call mom and tell on you! Got it? GOOD! Amy and Rock-Missing you guys! It's a lonely day here in ATL. It looks like the truth has come out and neighbor boy can't run with the big dogs. Therefore, he's staying on the porch while the CAT is still prowling for some of that Prudential! HA! HA! HA! HA! Love you two quacks! Happy Day Melon Style!

Kim, your lesson is waiting, dear. It's just a shame that I didn't trek to ATL with you and the other Melonettes. That just brings a much-too-big smile to the Captain's face to even imagine it (Cap'nsammich)! Anyway, we had a great time in Asheville, too...even though it was sans you, Amy, Turtle, and all. Greenville is gonna be incredible! Thanks for using my line, too...go figure... --The Captain

Indeed, Turtle, a weekend to remember... I'm a sleepy Northernseed, but when you party like a rock-star, you're bound to get into trouble... or forget where your cell phone is, even when you're talking on it. ;) Thank you for my presents Head Melon... I appreciate you checking up on me... I think you owe me some $$ since it seems that I won our little bet. Y'all, there aren't any finer ladies in all of the world than the Angels I was hangin' with Friday night... the Turtle, Rock and Doc connection was in full-effect! Thanks for dragging me up on that bar Kim... hugs to Buster. We're all a part of this crazy Cravin' Melon internet love affair... and you better BELIEVE Gouda is coming to the shows... I'll drag him kicking and screaming if I have to. Alright, I need to catch up on the 3 days of sleep I just missed. Hugs and Melons to everyone... and someone tell KH that his bid is in the mail. Later y'all...

Well I think that is the BIGGEST crowd, I've ever seen Melons play to in Atlanta! I'm sure the Steeplechase helped - but people were asking me ALL NIGHT how to get CDs!. Jenn- The Easter Bunny was extremely hungover on Sunday, but was able to make the late night stop in front of my house. He/She had obviously had one too many Newkie Browns because it rained between hiding and finding and all the bloody colours ran off the eggs. They were all pink or blue! Merle - thanks for wearing the shirt! I will always remember it!!! Fellas - wish we'd had more time for a chat, seems that you got there late and I had to leave early (3am!) for the bloody EB! Hope you enjoyed the cigars! We just bought our tix for the May 19 show online! Looking forward to meeting all the Mel-atives! Love always! Atlanta - shutting down!!!! Jules

Just thought I'd share my insignificant Melon moment... I spent last weekend in Austin where the weather was fantastic... three days of lounging poolside with friends and family basking in the sun (winter was too damn long), drinking frosty beverages and margaritas, and listening to the Melon -- Where I Want To Me, to be exact. I'm convinced that this disc was written specifically for this purpose. It doesn't get any better than that and that's why I love Cravin' Melon. Reservations are made so see y'all in 4 weeks. I want everyone to know that Cravin rocks. I got to see them live for the first time at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach for St. Patricks and they rocked the house. I was blown away. Best show I seen in a long time. I am definitely a Melonhead for life. Their CD stays in the player. I hate to see them go. Great band, great music what more could you ask for.

Hey Guys, The show in Asheville last Friday night was so good. I have lost count how many times I have seen you guys, but it is well over ten. I am really sad that you all are breaking up -- but I can understand that it may be better to move onto other things. The one thing that really impressed me the other night was the fact that you dedicated "Freedom Town" to my buddy Jeremy which I know is one of his favorite songs. He has been one of my best friends for a very long time. He was pretty upset (as anyone would be) with his grandmother dying, but that totally made his day, maybe week, or month. It meant so much to him that you all did that. Needless to say, I thought that was so cool. It meant a lot to me that you guys took just a little time to show that you care. I have many fond memories of Cravin' Melon, but I know that will be the one thing that I will NEVER forget. I really appreciate what you guys have done over the years. There has been a lot of great music and you all have given me a lot of great times, and a lot to look forward to. Cravin' Melon will certainly be missed. I like you all more now than ever. Take care, good luck, and Thanks a bunch!!!! Lee Scott Asheville, NC

Greetings from the Captain! It was great to see the usual suspects in Asheville, even though you all tended to get a little blurry by 2:00 a.m. The guys were great (as usual). I also missed the name of the lefty with the Les Paul who played guitar on a few songs. Isn't it amazing how many times one can sing "No woman no cry..." when one is drunk? Kristie and Jennifer, you can be assured that the Captain won't discuss female innebriation (the hotel was in STUMBLING distance, not walking distance)! Iris, thanks for the pick. Kim and Shannon, it was nice to meet you, even though you threw full beer bottles at me! Ha! Let's all push for the Cravin' Melon Reunion Tour soon after May! --The Captain (kferris@wfubmc.edu)

Calling all NORTHERNSEEDS... Christy and I are organizing a road-trip to Greenville for the final shows... e-mail me with your geographical location, whether you want to fly or drive (we're flying), and if you need to share hotel space, rental car, etc. I think we're going to try to save some $ by flying through Greensboro, NC on the 18th and renting a car together to drive to SC (a "do-over" of my New Year's Eve disaster trip... I'm well-prepared now!). Please let me know by next week so we can make flight arrangements, etc. I will be in NC next weekend for a wedding (and to party w/Miss July and Turtle - YAY!). Hope to see some of y'all! (It WOULD figure that Melon has the weekend off.) Guys, the show in Asheville last night was awesome as usual. I cannot tell you how much the dedication of Freedom Town meant to me, that was just what I needed. The last show in Asheville could not have been on a better day. The music always manages to pick me up when I need it, but a live show can do wonders, as I found out last night. I'm hoping to make it to a couple more shows, but if nothing else, I'll definitely see y'all in Greenville. Thanks again, you guys will never know how much that dedication meant to me. It meant a lot to my parents too, I told them about it today. We'll see you guys soon. Jeremy Asheville, NC Tallyin@aol.com

Hey guys, I was sad to hear you all are breaking up the band. I will miss seeing your shows especially in Asheville at Be Here Now. I wish you all could have made it back up to the Northeast to Boston as one of your last gigs but I know that home is in the South with a large fan club. I wanted you all to know I created a fan of The Great Procrastinator. He is a 7 y.o. boy I kid sit who procrastinates going to bed so I sing him the song but it doesn't work. Now, he wants my CD. Maybe, I'll give it to him one day. Thanks again for your great music. I'll miss you guys. Love ya, mean it! Susie Sweet

ey, you guys. I know it's all coming to an end soon and I don't guess I'll get to see you live ONE LAST TIME!!! It's still breaking my heart that y'all are splitting. I was hoping that y'all would get back to Roanoke before it was over, but guess not. I'm still kicking myself for not tripping down to "Sir Richards", which would have been the closest gig for us. I just wasn't paying attention and forgot!! It'll be hard going back to the "Coffee Pot" if not to see you guys. When y'all were here in Oct., we lucked out so good and got the 1st booth there to the left of Jimbo, where the opening band had their equipment cases sitting. When Doug did "Faithless Me", I just shut my eyes and got in my own little world. I think the 1st time I saw CM was downtown Roanoke on "The Market", in '97. And I've seen you every time you've been in Roanoke since! Anyway, I'm going to miss all of you like you'll never know. CM has meant ALOT to me over the years. Alive After 5 was a fantastic show. Those that missed it missed a very special guest performance by none other than Sam Hodgin on Sweet Tea. I'd say he's got the right influences around him with Jimbo Chapman playing right beside him. He'll be a guitar virtuoso by the time he reaches 12 :)) .....Great way to go out in Raleigh!

It's very exciting to see informaton about the Greenville show(s) being posted. I think that's really cool that the guys will even add a date for Sunday if the other ones sell out....just so that everyone has a chance to see them. AND....Friday is all ages. So no one has ANYTHING to complain about (except that this will be the last time we get to see them). :( Anyway.....I just wanted to add this little experience to the guestbook. I was taking my grandmother home yesterday and I popped in 'Squeeze Me' and put it on 'Sweet Tea'. After the first chorus...she says, 'That'll make you wanna tap your feet'. Now this is an 87 year old woman talking! So, I turned it up some more. And she usually tells me to 'turn that down!' but no....not Cravin' Melon. She loved it and tapped her foot the whole way home. (note: this isn't the grandma that goes to cravin' shows with me...it's the other one) So....everytime I hear the song, it will make me think of that...along with countless other memories. It just goes to show you how loveable CM's music is and how it affects people of all ages. Just thought I'd share. :) STEPH ROCK VEGAS

Looking forward to Alive After Five! The whole gang is coming out. I've even got Mom and Dad ready to take in a little Melon. I overheard a couple of people at the gym last night talking about Cravin' and AA5, should be a large turn out! Amy, funniest thing happened. I was at a college bar and this young guy was playing his heart out on the guitar. He gets on the mic and says, I'd like to play a Pat McGee song. It was great, I thought of you! See you in two weeks! Turtle, see you Friday! Sandra Dee, Michelle, and I are ready to take on ATL. Captain, sure we can't convince you to join us? My, what an eerie silence that has fallen upon our precious 'Patch. With such a robust performance as was witnessed by the Captain's own eyes in Danville, it saddens me to see this lack of keyboard clickety-clack! C'mon, people, the ride is not yet over. I guess this would be the appropriate point for John Belushi's infamous (does that mean more than famous?) line about Germans and Pearl Harbor, eh? Oh, well...it was still great to see the band, the babes, and the bottom of the Miller Lite bottle at Sir Richard's. Since all is quiet, maybe the Captain should just look for a conquest to earn his crimson wings, eh? Dreading the inevitable end... --The Captain

Greetings and Salutations fellow melon-heads! I'm calling in all Atlanta melon-heads to be at the show on Saturday. I want you to know that I have to hide Easter eggs when I get home at 3 am. I have returned from my trip down under, where I witnessed the Richmond Tigers pull 1-1 in Aussie Rules Footy. It's no final four, but it's home! Love ya, miss ya, see ya soon! Jules

I have been living in California for the last 2 years, and I think it is really sad that every time that Doug opens his mouth, beautiful words come out and I am not there in North Carolina to hear them, and that by the time I get home in a few months, I wont be able to hear them anymore. I will keep the faith. Lots of Love, Becky

Just to clarify a few things from my earlier post about the game (and to follow the classy example set by The Captain)....I don't want anyone to think I am detracting from the victory that Duke deserved the other night. They were THE best team this year hands down and are thus the rightful holders of the national championship. I do, however, stand by my comments about the officiating--you can even substitute UNC in there and the story would be the same....I don't think anyone will deny that BOTH those ACC teams get favorable treatment by officials, the press, and game commentators. But perhaps there's absolutely nothing wrong with that--maybe that rightfully comes with the territory of being THE BEST team in the country. I don't think the officiating decided the game Monday night but that game did provide a good example of what I'm talking about. Okay that's it....Sincere congrats to all the Dookies. Who's coming to Alive After 5?!!!

Duke won only because of "Mask" Dunleavy's sudden air raid (doesn't he resemble the Cher's kid in the movie by the same name?). I was actually pulling for Duke (because of their ACC affiliation), but it was hard to do. I just dislike Loren Woods more than I hate Duke--that helped me get through it all. Also, it's hard not to like a guy like Battier. He's a class act. It's a shame he wasn't a Tarheel! Anyway, the Captain admits when his troops are defeated. The white flag is out...Duke reigns supreme in the ACC this year! Just wait til next year...if Forte stays, he is likely to chug down a bottle of "ripple" and get medieval on the Duke's @$$! Until then... --The Captain

Alright, well I guess the dookies deserve some congrats. I will give it up for Dunleavy, he's just going to get better. And Battier kicks ass as well, but you have to be f---ing kidding me about the calls he and the rest of them were getting. Last night was THE worst for poor officiating in favor of Duke. Not that it would have really changed the outcome of the game (we'll never know really). I'm not saying this just to piss anyone off or be a poor sport, I know Duke played a great game and deserved to win, but it's a FACT and y'all dookies shouldn't need any more proof of it than last night. OK, anyway congratulations to the dookies :) Keith D. (and don't screw with my email address there Hodgin!!)

Never has a girl been so upset and even heartbroken. Some of the best nights of my life were when I went to a Cravin' Melon concert. You are the only band/artist(s) in which I own ALL of you CDs... and that's saying a great deal for the simple fact that my philosophy is that if you have one or two, it's enough to get a feel for a artist/band's style. I simply LOVE you guys and I'm going to miss you guys! My best friend and I are headed down to Chapel Thrill (GO HEELS!!!) this Thursday for your performance at Sigma Chi- please don't cancel! You guys played in Greensboro a few weeks back at the warehouse and I was unable to attend, so I'm really psyched about this show! We (my best friend and I) just gotta hear "SWEET TEA" for more time! I was looking for "The Great Procrastinator" in one of the local stores here in Greenville, SC, and was sad to hear that you were calling it quits. I definitely going to try to catch one the local dates. Too bad you're not coming back to your hometown! I caught a Next Move show way back when, along with one from Doghouse, so I bought the Next Move's CD as soon as I saw it. BTW, I had a chance to do some work with Steve, (one of the Next Move's founding members) back in 1996. When I heard they had formed Cravin' Melon and had gotten signed to Mercury, I looked forward to the new CD, and was not disappointed. I had seen CM open up for the Edwin McCain Band at the Greenville Memorial Auditorium's last rock concert ever. Wow, what energy! One of the coolest things about "Red Clay Harvest" was when I opened the booklet and saw a photo of the Ross Grocery in Pelham, SC, which I have driven by numerous times. It's cool seeing something you recognize in a major-label artist's CD! I managed to find a copy of "Squeeze Me" on eBay, and it arrived yesterday. I was hoping to get a sealed copy at retail so the guys could collect their 50 cents royalty, but no luck. When I was looking at it, I had never noticed that the "Balls of Juice" logo in the corner says Greenville, SC on it. And what's up with that wacky map? Gotta go to Manifest records when they open up this morning and see if they have any copies of "TGP". See ya. --

I have been looking forward to it for a while, but now i'm not so sure as i'm wanting it to get here that fast because tonight i realized, this is going to be the last time i ever get to see you guys perform live. I just want to thank each one of you for all of the memories. There have been a lot of friends made at your shows including friendships with the group and friendships with other audience members. it's always been a lot of fun and i must say i don't want it to end. Of course i do realize it is time to move on though and whatever happens happens for a reason. Just wanted to thank you all in writing before the show on April 8. I hope i get a chance to talk to u guys there. Thanks a lot. peas and melons. J-Dog

Hey there! OK, so as soon as I find out about this cool band I've never heard of I find out you're no longer. I am so upset!!!! =*( I would just like to say that I think your music is awesome! I've been jamming to it for the past month almost non stop. I've turned on so many of my friends to Cravin Melon. I am so cravin mellon like you would not believe! I'm wondering why y'all never played in Tuscaloosa, AL. Maybe you did before I was only enough to get in anywhere. I'm hoping you'll still play in Atlanta. I am trying to get the weekend off and if I can I'm going to drive the 4 hours to see the show. Anyway, I'm sorry y'all are hangin it up... Hey, maybe I can join the band and y'all can stay together! =) Anyway, just know that you guys rock and you'll always have a fun in Bama! Love, kacey

The message board is so quiet these days.... Anyway, both the HOB and Windjammer shows were fantastic as usual. It was a treat to see Mark join you for a couple of tunes at the Jammer and if I'm not mistaken, I also saw Warren from Rev D and Randy from FWF in the audience. Looks like everyone is sad to see you go... I'll say it again, but DAMN, it's just not going to be the same when I don't have a Melon show to look forward to. I'm going have to find a new excuse to travel all over the Carolinas and rack up thousand and thousands of miles on my car... Doug, sorry I didn't have a chance to finish our conversation, but Brian Fechino is a great addition to the PMB. I was really sorry to see Al leave because the harmonies were fantastic, but the new electric thing works well also. And Gary, I was very impressed by the one-handed drumming at the Jammer. Takes talent to drink a beer and keep the beat at the same time! It's highly doubtful that I'll get to another show before the finale (unless you play Center City Fest - hint, hint) so until then~~~ Meredith Richmond, VA

Is the first stage of depression denial? I think that's where I've been since I heard the bad news, but I guess it's time to face the harsh reality. I've been listening to & following you guys since my freshman year in college '95. Since then, I've been spreading the seeds and turning all of my friends on to you guys. And I've been through my share of social groups since then, but you guys have remained! I've recently graduated from UNCW and entered into the real world, but I've been hanging on by a thread to my college days. I don't want to let go, but I feel like this breakup as a sign for me to cut the final string. I've also come to the conclusion that this is the opportunity for me to tackle an issue that has been weighing heavy on my heart for a couple of years now.......You see, that wonderful night at HOB when you guys recorded SQUEEZE ME, I was there with some new melon-goers. Little did we all know that singing the line "temptation never looked so sweet" would turn into what is now a lasting relationship between 2 new melon fans. Yes, I'm talking about you, KELLY & JOSH!!! Well, over the past few years, things have happened and I've since lost touch with those two, mainly because of my attitude :( We've all continued to follow the band, but separately. And for a while I've pondered with a heavy heart on what to do about it. Well, I see this break as a chance to reunite and mourn together the loss of what has proven to be the best band ever!! So, Kelly, Josh, this is my plea for you....put all differences aside and grieve with me at the final shows! It just wouldn't seem right if you guys weren't close by!

I agree J-Dog... PMB's "No Woman, No Cry" isn't quite the same as the Melon version. They're a talented band, and super-nice guys... auditioning hard to replace Melon in my heart come May. Cynde, I don't know "WTFAW" but I do know that I must have "Please disrespect me" tattooed across my forehead! I'm still considering the July 5 road trip... might need to reconsider 4/6 to Philly so I can feel out the situation in person... and with Christy (yay!). It seems as though some our students are failing so bad that we're going to have to offer summer classes... so it'll be a few weeks before I know my schedule. Prices for the May journey have been pretty high. I'm going to look into more options this weekend so we can make a Northernseed pilgrimage to Greenville for the great Melon sendoff. Thanks for being a pseudo-therapist, Head Melon... although I'm not sure who has more problems... you or me?! (LOL-JK) Hugs, love and kisses to everyone in the Melonpatch!! Singin' Melon, what are the chances of at least getting lyrics in writing for the extended version of Camelot that never made it to the stage? Also, why no Faithless Me at the HOB? Finally, ya gotta love the medly-version of Land of Oz! Looking forward to Carolina Football Season!!! --The General Chinbeard!

I just heard the bad news, and I just can't believe it. What are we supposed to do without Cravin' Melon? I understand that it has to end sometime though. I have been following you guys since 1994, and cannot imagine what it will be like to never see you play again. You are the best band that there is, and I hate to see you go. You will truly be missed in Charleston, S. C. I will never forget the first show at Characters in Greenville, and I cannot wait until Saturday at the Windjammer. Hopefully we will run into each other sometime. Mandy

The show at the House of Blues was awesome!!! One of the best ever, without a doubt. The trip from Asheville to Myrtle Beach was interesting, my Jeep broke down 3 or 4 times, so it took us a couple of hours longer than it should have, but the show was well worth it, I would do it again. Then we come back from the beach and it's snowed 5 or 6 inches of snow here, I wouldn't mind still being down there. Doug, I'm glad you liked the Braves hat, it's a favorite. See you guys soon. TERRI! I miss you too! :( I should hopefully be passing through for a wedding in April... but otherwise I'm stuck here, Melonless, in New York, grading midterms, trying to keep my stressed-out students from freaking out too much! Hey Beantown... WHFAW? HA HA! Only THIS Melonseed could get away with giving VH and Pat an attitude... BTW, dude hasn't called yet - and I'm not getting ANY work done! Sigh. Miss July, great catching up with you... glad you & Turtle had fun... sorry I'll be Charlotte-bound next time you're in NYC... not to worry - there is much partying just waiting to happen! Logan, I'll need an update soon. Thanks again Captain for the WFU present for David... it did arrive and he loves it! Anyone up for a road trip to New Haven on 4/3? How 'bout Philly on 4/6? Hugs and Melons, y'all! :) Amy New Yor

Hmmm....my first guestbook entry. What to say, what to say? I could go the "generic fan" route and say how much I love the shows, join in the college basketball rivarly, etc., so on, and so forth...but won't. Instead I'd like to ask some other of you long time "melonheads" to help me get Beautiful Thing played sometime. C'mon, it's only the best song ever written. What does a girl have to do? p.s. Hey Guys. Had a great time Saturday night, but who was that obnoxious chick in the gray sweater feeding me little white cups of funny tasting Jello and pouring a Jack and Coke down my throat??????!!!! Hey, I had on a gray sweater and uh oh - now I remember....... oops - never mind ;) Hope I didn't get too out of hand and if I did, my sincere apologies. Peggy, Kristie and Terina - I should get the pictures back before the show Friday and will bring copies; at least the camera had auto focus on it, so even if my vision was blurred, the pictures shouldn't be. And on another note, Amy B. I miss you - hope to see or talk to you soon.

Went to the show Saturday-St. Patrick's Day. What a cheesy club-the only good thing was the great show and getting to see Cravin again. I am so sad that you will be no longer......I loves Doug's voice, hair (shorter) and eyes and will miss the band. Best of Luck

this NY melonseed is giving the props to penn state... i honestly didn't forsee the tar heels lasting past the sweet 16, but i should have realized that yet another sunday game was a jinx... oh well. it's been a great tourney so far (from what i've heard... not like i've been able to watch many of the games). on a lighter note, i got to spend some quality time with the pat mcgee band on long island this weekend. i want to thank cravin' melon... y'all are the reason i've gotten to know these guys and their music. they're headed down south for some shows (raleigh on 3/22 and others)... all the melonseeds should check them out. link should be on my name if head melon does it right! ;) hugs and melons!

Okay, Head Melon, I'll overlook the "@#$% the 'Heels!" comment after the show on Friday, but I can't just stand around and let you get all fired up about my beloved (hats off please) 'Heels disappearing act yesterday. As a true fan, it's easy for me to come up with excuses...for example...Forte decided to make a lackluster showing, in order to stop rumors of his early exit from UNC. I don't know...I guess they just choked! (You can tell it's spring, birds singing, flowers blooming, Tarheels choking...yeah, I've heard the jokes!). On another note, J-Dog, I hate I didn't get over to you guys. We had two in our group who were "predisposed" with new acquaintances, and could not be left alone! Oh, and Singin' Melon, I hope the drumstick went to right lady...it was a tough job with so many beautiful 'Melon Honeys grabbing for it! Sorry the post is so long...Cravin' Melon just gets better and better and better... --The Captain
